The Fit Traveler: Avoiding Delays to Your Health

Holiday travel can be extremely stressful. For many, perhaps you, good eating habits tend to go out the window.

I’ve got some great tips to help keep your health in top form while dealing with the hustle and bustle of holiday travel. It all starts with proper planning.

• One of the best things you can do when traveling is to bring your own food. Simple staples, such as bottled water, granola bars, healthy nuts, peanut butter, trail mix and fruits and vegetables that don’t require refridgeration can be life savers.

• If you end up eating at a restaurant, check for the healthy items on the menu. If you have a smartphone, look up nutritional information online before you order if the restaurant can’t readily provide it.

• Eating on the flight? Check with your airline about ordering a custom meal.

Do this in advance.

• Flight delayed or have a long layover? Don’t snack. Get busy. If you’re on the plane, do some reading. If you’re in the airport, browse a store or walk around.

• Hold yourself accountable by writing down everything you consume. It’s a great visual aid to help keep you on the right track.

• Before your flight, make sure you’re fully hydrated and have eating a good meal.

• While it might be tempting due to habit or stress, keep from ordering any alcoholic drinks on your flight.

• When staying in a hotel, just say “no thanks” to the mini bar. If it’s locked, refuse the key. And if not, just stay away.

• Use your coffee pot in your hotel room to heat up water for healthy meals, such as oatmeal.

• Don’t sacrifice your health by eating a poor meal at a fast food place just to gain what amounts to a few minutes of time.

• When choosing a hotel room, look for one that has a little refrigerator and microwave in it. And find the nearest grocery story so you can stock up and eat healthy.

• Keep hydrated throughout your travels. Your body will perform better and it can help you feel full.
