VITAMIN D

(01/15/2010) Dr. Jeffry Life

So you think you're getting enough vitamin D?

The most common reasons for vitamin D3 deficiency in the U.S. are lack of exposure to sunlight and infrequent consumption of cod liver oil or cold water fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, tuna and mackerel.

The sunscreen in cosmetics and lotions make getting sufficient sunlight difficult-and tanning beds don't provide vitamin D.

Very few foods naturally contain vitamin D. Many foods such as cereals, orange juices and some yogurts are fortified with vitamin D. However, white mushrooms are an excellent source of the sunshine vitamin.

Speak with your physician about having your vitamin D levels tested.
